Ombré is an often requested hair colour in salons around the world. The trend became popular a few years ago and has been gaining momentum thanks to celebs and trendsetters everywhere. Part 1 – Preparation
Step 1: For optimal results, begin this look with dry, clean hair. This will ensure that the colour goes on evenly and will fully saturate your strands. Using the end of a fine-tooth comb, divide your hair into two horizontal sections with a large zigzag pattern starting at the top of your part. Using an elastic or pins, secure the pulled-back hair on the top of your head. When you’re done, you should have a large section of hair around the crown of your head sectioned off. Expert tip: Ensure that you’ve left out a half-inch-thick section of hair around your hairline, from your part to your ears.
Step 2: Using the application brush from the box of dye, backcomb the section of hair that’s left, from the middle to the ends. Do this gently and lightly so your hair doesn’t get too tangled. Keep in mind you only need a bit of backcombing, not full-on ’80s teased hair.
Part 2 – Colour
Step 3: Once you’ve finished backcombing your hair, squeeze a healthy amount of dye onto your application brush. Put on the plastic gloves from the box to protect your hands.
Step 4: Starting at the front of your head, gently comb the bleach into your hair with the application brush. Starting at the middle of the strands and combing down to the ends, apply it to all the hair that’s left down. Work the colour into your hair so your mane is fully saturated with dye. This will give you that subtle ombré effect going from brown to blonde. Repeat this step until the whole bottom section of your head is covered. Expert tip: To minimize mess, gently twist your hair together in small sections as you apply the bleach.
Step 5: Take down some hair from the top separated section of your hair and repeat steps 2 to 4. Work your way through the remainder of your hair, dying each section separately. Finish off with the pieces of hair that frame your face.
Step 6: When you’ve applied all the dye, set a timer and sit tight to let the bleach work. Once the correct time has elapsed, rinse out the dye in the shower or in the sink. Ensure that all the colour has washed out (your water should run clear), and then apply conditioner to hydrate and soften your hair. After you’ve rinsed out the conditioner, towel dry your hair and spritz on a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray. This will help strengthen your mane post-colour. Style your hair as desired.
