For the past few seasons, ‘90s-inspired beauty looks reigned supreme. Deep crimson lips, rosy-brown blush and smudged eyeliner were the name of the game, with people trying their best to look like that era’s grunge queens. But now, that throwback goes back even further, with the disco days of the ‘70s making their way into our social feeds, and gold makeup is leading the charge. Whether it’s just a shimmery hit of gold eyeshadow, or a full-on golden, luminous face, the trend isn’t going anywhere – it even popped up on the runways for spring 2019. So if you haven’t yet mastered the gold makeup look, now’s your chance. Look to this guide for tips on how to perfect gold eye makeup, how to get glowing skin and how to make it last all night. With helpful tips and tricks from L’Oréal Paris Canadian Makeup Artist & Expert Jodi Urchik, you’ll nail this look in no time, and we bet it’ll be your go-to for any evening that requires a hit of ‘70s-inspired glamour.

Steps for Prepping Your Skin:

Step 1: Start with moisturized skin, and then choose a primer based on your skin type – mattifying if you’re oily, and extra-hydrating if you tend to be dry or flaky. Try L’Oréal Paris Infallible Glow-Lock Primer or L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte-Lock Primer.

Step 2: Next, minimize any imperfections or redness with a concealer. Try L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Glow Concealer , and focus on those oilier areas, like your chin, nose and forehead, and the area under your eyes if you’re prone to dark circles.

Step 3: Apply a foundation all over your face that’ll leave your skin with a dewy finish, like L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation. Be sure to blend it well, bringing it underneath your jawline and chin to avoid any harsh lines. Last, set your makeup with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro Sweep & Lock Loose Powder.

Steps for Prepping Your Eyes:

Step 1: Spritz a firm eyeshadow brush with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Makeup Extender Setting Spray. This will help prep your lids for your gold eye makeup, especially if they get oily.

Step 2: A great neutral base colour to start with is Colour 2 from the L’Oréal Paris Paradise Enchanted Eyeshadow Palette. Brush it all over your lids to finishing prepping them for the shimmery shadows to come. Pro tip: Dampened brushes help amplify the pigment of any eyeshadow, and extend their wear time.

Steps for Applying Your Gold Makeup:

Step 1: The first shade in your gold eyeshadow look also comes from the Paradise Enchanted Palette – Colour 5. Dust it all over your eyelids, as well.

Step 2: Apply L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Shimmerista Highlighting Powder in Sunlight into the crease of your eyelids and then along your lower lash line for even more light-catching shimmer.

Step 3: Finish off your eye look with an eyeliner pencil in a brown shade, like L’Oréal Paris Infallible Gel Crayon 24H Waterproof Liner in Browny Crush, and then add a coat of L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara to lift and volumize your lashes.

Bonus: If you want even more shimmer, add a liquid highlighter into the mix. Try a little bit of L’Oréal Paris L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion applied right under your brows.

Now you know exactly how to achieve a ‘70s-inspired gold makeup look that’s elevated and never over the top. But, if you do want to take it up a notch, try using a gold liquid eyeliner or a shimmery coat of gold lipstick.
